Download Status Bar NOT showing in Firefox

One day, I was browsing the Internet using Firefox browser and all of a sudden my PC restarted because of a sudden surge or power fluctuation !

After my Windows XP came back and I started the Firefox again, what I noticed that whenever I try to download a file from within Firefox, it starts downloading but “Download status bar or window doesn’t show up

Working on this problem, I found out a simple solution. Following are the steps to get Download status bar back to normal.

  • All you need to do is to delete “downloads.rdf” file. This file keeps track of what is being downloaded using Firefox, and some times gets corrupt due to abnormal PC restart etc.

  • To locate “download.rdf” you need to do the following,

    • Click “Start” button.
    • Select “Run
    • Type %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles , as shown in Fig.

  • A folder will open showing your profile folder e.g., xxxxxxxx.default (where xxxxxxxx can be any name)

  • Open xxxxxxxx.default folder by Double Clicking on it.

  • On the new windows, locate the file ”downloads.rdf” and delete it.

  • Finally, Close Firefox browser (if open).

  • Restart Firefox and if every thing goes as described you’ll see your download status bar again while downloading.

  • Enjoy.

Additionally, in case of problem, also make sure that following procedure is applied:

In Firefox browser,
  • Goto Tools Menu | Select Options.

  • In the new window, select the "Main" tab at the top.

  • Make sure that "Show the downloads window when downloading a file" is checked.
