How to find Response times between Your Computer and a Remote Server

Sometimes, you experience a slow response from a Website or Web/FTP server. You keep trying to connect and still get the same results. At that point, one may wish to find what’s going on.

Fortunately, there is a “built-in” Windows program called “tracert”, which can be a useful troubleshooting tool to determine the actual response times between a remote server and your own computer.

Here is how:

  • Open a command shell session by clicking “Start” button,
  • Select “Run”, then,
  • Type “cmd” (without quotes) and click OK, as follows,

  • On the command prompt, type “tracert location name” (without quotes)
Where location name can be any IP address or website name e.g., www.google.com

  • Press Enter

  • The program will trace the route data packets take from your computer to that location, listing every server it is routed through along the way.
